![]() ![]() Physically speaking like many other games of this ilk, there’s a fair amount to micromanage. The first of these is how it deals with your wellbeing both physical and mental. Speaking of authenticity, Green Hell has more than a few tricks up its digital sleeve in this regard. ![]() Though it might seem like unnecessary padding, I certainly appreciate what developer Creepy Jar is going for here in terms of constructing a more authentic survival sandbox experience that has you going through a series of believable motions, rather than just interacting with a bunch of cold, tiled menus. Likewise, animal traps require a corresponding level of cleverness to construct, with the wood being fashioned together with the correct bait being placed inside. ![]() In Green Hell, you must instead not only have the correct amount of wood to support the fire, but also craft a hand drill with a plank, small piece of wood and dried leaves to get the fire started. Building a campfire and setting it alight for example, isn’t just a case of combining chunks of wood and tossing a fire onto it. The coconut halves can be used to boil water to make it clean, cook soups, or set them outside and collect clean rainwater.None of this will come as any great surprise to those of you who are well interned in the ins and outs of the survival sandbox genre, but where Green Hell does things a little differently is in how it deals with the minutiae of those sandbox survival beats. You can drink the water for hydration, eat the meat for carbs, and you can turn the shell into a sort of canteen to carry water, or break it in half to use as bowls. I found the coconut to be the most versatile tool in the game. Survival is fun because I was able to experiment on what to make and how to identify plants, I needed to craft things like bandages and other items needed to survive. I have two saves that I played with, one in story mode and one in survival. In a pinch, having these mushrooms allows you to drink bad water or contaminated food if you are far away from camp or in a tight spot. Thankfully, there are specific types of mushrooms that cure parasites. There is plenty of vegetation to pick from, but eating too much, or drinking bad water, will give you parasites. A severe deficiency in any one of these can lead to difficulty performing simple tasks - or death. You have hydration, fats, protein, and carbs. Green Hell takes it a step forward by dividing up your nutrients into macro counting. Like most survival games, you need to eat and drink to survive. You must find clean water, make fires, build up your camp, and explore in order to sustain yourself. Some might find this frustrating, but it fits with the idea that you have to figure out how to survive. The game really throws you into the fire with no real handholding. When I said the early game serves as a basic tutorial, that was an understatement. There are angry jaguars, venomous snakes, and numerous other perils awaiting as you explore the jungle to try and make it to the next day. To make a long story short, your GF goes missing and it is up to you to survive and find out what happened to her. You and your significant other travel to the Amazon to make contact with an indigenous tribe. The story mode for Green Hell works as an early tutorial that slowly introduces you to the basic mechanics of the game. I am happy to say that I am a massive fan of this game. Initially released in 2019, it has built a huge following and continuously has updates which bring new aspects to the game. Green Hell is a game I’ve heard about for some time.
